Venice of the East at the Venice Biennale

Since its inauguration 122 years ago, the Venice Biennale has organised exhibitions in many branches of the Arts—art, architecture, cinema, dance, music and theatre—and hosted exhibitions of the works of a number of artists, from Renoir and Picasso to Damien Hirst and Hito Steyerl. Titled this year, Viva Arte Viva, the 57th Venice Biennale showcases artworks and performances of more than 120 artists from 85 countries in the nine ‘trans-pavilions’, such as the Pavilion of Artists and Books, the Pavilion of Joys and Fears, the Pavilion of Time and Infinity, etc.

Thailand’s national representation this year includes an exhibition ‘Krung Thep Bangkok’ by Somboon Hormtientong, which offers a fresh perspective on the life of pedestrians through objects such as drawings of Bangkok streets, wooden chests and colourful plastic chairs.
A life-sized woven rattan Ferrari named ‘Chiang Rai Ferrari’ by Anon Pairot is supposed to represent the cheerful lamentation of
the working class in rural Thailand and their goal of owning a car, while a set of video art by Kawita Vatanajyankur, one of which features
her posing as a weighing scale, is displayed as a commentary on the social injustice against women in society.
